The Whitney Museum of Art's
website for kids is intended to foster a "you're an artist; I'm an artist" line of thinking. To encourage kids to think of themselves as similar to Georgia O'Keeffe, Cory Arcangel, and other artists in the museum's collection, we decided to structure the site largely as a set of profile pages. There are profile pages for Georgia O'Keeffe, Cory Arangel, and the like built by Whitney Education Staff and profile pages built and maintained by kids featuring their work, inspiration, collections they create on the site, quotes, badges, and personal statements.
To build these pages, we designed a series of modules with different sets of rules to be used for different types of content. The kids' pages are built from the same sets of modules as the artist pages. So they are very analogous in structure and appearance. However there is a lot of variety depending on what people post and how they manipulate that content on their page.
